12Net has entered the digital domain offering a composition of paid and free Internet services. The company is based in Patmos and serves the northern Dodecanese. The two organizations that support 12Net are the 2B1 Foundation and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, Mass., USA.The 2B1 Foundation was formed to provide up to date computer literacy to children in parts of the world where it is both lacking and needed and to this end offers education and training support to children. The Media Lab at MIT provides technical support when needed.
Along with educational dedication, the commercial services made available include electronic commerce, advertisements-on-line, and information services. Revenues accrued from subscriptions offered on a 12 month or 6 month basis will be reinvested into the educational commitment to the schools in Patmos, Leros, Arki, Lipsi and Agathonisi. A total of 49% of 12Net's profits will provide for the purchase of information technology and computers for the students at the above mentioned schools.
12Net also offers the following services: computer instruction, web page design, electronic mail, news groups, digital television, VHF Internet communication, Wi-Fi access, teleconferencing, tourist information's, voice mail and other electronic and digital communications which will become available in the future.
12Net collaborates closely with Hellenic Federation of Information Technology, the Quest group, Hellas Online, Sun, Cisco and Vodafone.
