Agathonisi island

In the deep blue waters of the Dodecanese and in the North East of the body of South Sporades, is situated the Agathonisi island, surrounded by other smaller uninhibited islands like Kounelonisi, Katsagani, Neronisi, Strongily, Pitta etc. It's the northeast island of Thothekanisa group and it's 8 nautical miles from the Micrasiatian coasts.
The length of the island is 7 kilometers from the East to the west, the width 3 kilometers and the length of its coast is about 32 kilometers. The island looks like a donkey, which gallops towards Meandrous river of Asia Minor where its muddy waters reach the eastern coasts of Agathonisi.
As we know from ancient Greek authors and modern historians and geographers, Agathonisi was firstly called Hyetousa. Thoucydides calls it Tragea, while Stravon calls it Tragee (together with the reast smaller islands around it), again Ploutarchos calls Tragia and Stephanos Byzantios refers to it as Tragee.
The name we use today, Agathonisi, was given by a teacher, papa-Giannis Panagiotou (a priest), who was teaching in Agathonisi during the second and third decade of our century; he came from the island of Fourni. Its name derives from the decent and honest character of its inhabitants (Agathos means decent the island where decent people live).
Here the visitor's glance cannot stay cool; one experiences a never-ending wandering adventure.
Its name by itself predisposes the visitor to understand that this is a very peaceful and good-natured island. Ideal place to feel secluded and far away from everything and everyone, as indeed you are, since regular boat communication with Patmos and Leros is only twice a week.
The inhabitants are mainly fishermen.
If you plan to stay, there are about 40 rented rooms on the island where one can book.
